Much-loved Nelson wine tasting event postponed
Nelson Tasman winemakers will have to wait a little longer to show off their 2021 vintage with the decision to postpone the much-loved annual Nelson Tasman Tasting Event.
Usually a sell-out, this year the popular event which brings together more than 20 local wineries was set to move from the Boat House to a bigger venue at Rutherford Hotel Nelson on Tuesday, October 26.
Organisers Nelson Winegrowers Association said continued uncertainty around COVID-19 and the associated alert levels had forced their hand.
“This has been a constant on the calendar since I think around 2007. We’re sad to have to delay, but at this stage it’s the only realistic option given the format of the event,” says Nelson Winegrowers Association Chair Paul Miles.
“Despite the turmoil of the past 12 months, 2021 proved to be a stunning vintage and there are some fantastic premium wines being released across all our varieties. Nelson sauvignon blanc has been a particular stand-out, giving Marlborough a run for its money, and our chardonnays continue to stand out across New Zealand.”
Miles said they were hopeful the event could still go ahead down the track.
“We’re not ready to completely cancel it and let the home crowd down. But in the meantime, I’d like to encourage all local wine lovers to get out there, visit some of our cellar doors and buy local.”
Wines from Nelson Tasman are easily identified by the distinctive green ‘Taste Nelson Wines’ sticker, an initiative launched last year to make it even easier for consumer to spot Nelson Tasman’s premium wines on the shelf.
Miles said ticketholders could either opt for a refund or hold onto their tickets which will be re-issued once a new date is set. For refunds, go to Wine Nelson’s website at tastenelsonwines.nz.
